Federation

By default this software federates with other sites using the ActivityPub protocol. The ActivityPub protocol hosts a number of projects, and not all of these are friendly or support any forms of online safety, and may provide avenues for third-party spam and harassment arriving in your site. This is especially true of projects that emulate Twitter/X communication policies, known for being friendly to AI-bots, dog-piling behaviour, and misinformation.

This software provides a "feature toggle" that will prevent any communications from these sites entering your stream and only permit "contained conversations",  a software feature which provides mechanisms to restrict audiences and respondents and keep conversations intact. This will reduce the AI slop in your feed and completely eliminate third-party spam and harassment arriving through these poorly moderated spaces.

An admin may enable this feature from the command line:
util/config system.conversations 1

It is recommended in this situation to also enable the "uafilter" addon; then visit /uafilter from your browser, and accept the defaults. This will block the largest Twitter/X emulator as well as large corporate providers; which can take down your small community site through their constant un-moderated chatter, while also "hoovering all public information".
